Riding steeper slopes will be the first challenge for beginner snowboarders.
They could make turns without any trouble on beginner slopes.
But turning on steeper slopes is not that easy for them as they can’t complete the turn and fall.
Why does it happen?
It actually depends on the case but let’s figure it out by focusing on the nose to tail balance this time.
Typical failure of the nose to tail balance while riding on steeper slopes is “Leaning Back”.
By leaning back towards the tail of the board the beginner loses control of their rotational balance so that they can’t complete the turn and fall as a result of getting more speed.
While beginners are riding on beginner slopes, the angle of the slope is very close to flat ground.
So it’s easy for them to keep their body standing straight in the center of the board.
Because of the angle of the steeper slope, they can’t adjust their balance to the speed and their body starts leaning back.
It’s typically happening when their board is pointing straight down the hill.
As I mentioned above, it’ll be hard to turn their body with their posture leaning back.
In the first half of a turn their body is standing straighter so it’ll be ok to turn their body and snowboard.
But turning their body and board will be harder once the board is pointing downhill.
By continuing to point the board downhill with their posture leaning back they will increase speed and eventually fall.
For beginner and intermediate snowboarders, holding their balance in the center is strongly recommended.
Here are three key points for you to keep the balance centered.
1. Push your hips forward
Move your hips forward in the first half of your turn.
This way, your upper body will be standing straight rather than leaning back.
You will need to have more effort because it might be little scary to move your whole body forward while your board is pointing down the hill.
But it will avoid your body leaning back thus you will have more control.
2. Put your fore arm down, pull your back arm up
When your body is leaning back, your shoulder level is leaning back too.
So, put your shoulders parallel to the ground and put your upper body back to straight with this way.
It will work better if you can push your hips forward at the same time.
3. Pull your board backward
Physically, what you do here is exactly same as pushing your hips forward.
But this time you move your board instead of your hips and upper body.
Try not to move your upper body.
Push your board backward while your upper body is standing straight.
You can start moving your board backward while you are still going across the hill in the beginning of the turn.
This is the easiest way to try out of these three as you don’t need to put much effort.
