Your spin axis should be standing straight from the lip angle while taking off so that you can throw your spin without any conflicts with any external force. And your spin will be under your control while in midair. But if you are focusing on rotation too much, then you will lose focus on balance while taking off. This is the reason why people leaning towards the edge and forward while taking off. People who pay attention to balance while taking off try to avoid leaning toward the edge. Yet they don’t think about avoiding Nollie takeoff very much since it’s hard to be noticed. If you can’t spin comfortably even if your take off is not too soon and you are not leaning too much toward the edge while taking off, then you can doubt Nollie takeoff. Typical tips for this issue given from many coaches is “lean back”. Then people lean their upper body backward which won’t make it any better in many cases because your body will just be bent backward so your spin axis won’t be straight. Ok, now let’s see how you can solve the issue. Here I can introduce better and practical idea. Wait for takeoff If your body stay standing straight just as straight air until your center of the board come to the lip, your body won’t lean at all. So wait for takeoff with your posture standing straight and try to not rotate and lean your body until your center of the board come to the lip. But you can rotate your body as much as you like after it. Start learning to time with straight air. And apply it to spinning 180, 360 and so on. Stand and pop 90 degrees from the lip angle You can stand and pop on both feet straight but from jump angle. If you are focusing too much on rotation you don’t pay attention to the lip angle. Try to visualize a mini trampoline on the lip and jump on it 90 degrees from it. So your shoulders will be leveled with the lip angle and it won’t be nollie takeoff. Stand straight over your back leg As I mentioned, try to not lean your body backward. But instead, try standing straight over your back leg just as a standing position before doing an ollie on skateboard. However, you don’t have to do actual ollie to take off. You can just pop straight up over your back leg. Make sure if your weight is more on your back leg while taking off so it won’t be a nollie takeoff. For your frontside spin, you can focus on lifting your nose up while taking off rather than popping straight up over your back leg.
